Legendary Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will perform Saturday, July 18, at the 33rd edition of the M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest on the Onondaga Community College Campus, executive director and founder of the event Frank Malfitano said Wednesday.
Wynton Marsalis and Buckwheat Zydeco will also co-headline the free event, which will take place Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18.
Malfitano announced the lineup during a press conference at M&T Bank in downtown Syracuse.
“Headliners Aretha Franklin and Wynton Marsalis are superstars, two of the most-recognizable entertainers in the world, and artists that everyone knows and loves,” Malfitano stated.
This will be Franklin’s second appearance at Jazz Fest, after making an appearance in 2007 to celebrate the festival’s 25th anniversary.
She’ll take the stage after Lake Street Dive, a popular new quartet from Brooklyn, during Saturday’s lineup.
Friday, The City of Syracuse Parks and Rec All Star Band will open the festival, followed by AppleJazz, a local group of Syracuse-based jazz musicians.
In addition, two other Central New York-area jazz ensembles, Noteified and The Upstate Burners, will perform in Saturday’s lineup as well.
Malfitano said this year’s theme for the festival will be “Superstars, shooting stars, and rising stars.”
