vision local mr lavoz sate phone newThe New York State Public Service Commission has announced that the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) has assigned a new area code, area code 680, as a second area code in Central New York.

The new area code will join the existing 315 area code in 18 counties across the region.

Public service commission officials said local telephone companies have been directed to activate the 680 area code by the first quarter of 2017.

“To implement the new overlay area code, there will be a seven-month period for network preparation, followed by an 11-month permissive dialing period that allows both seven-digit and 10-digit dialing to work,” the commission stated. “After this period, 10-digit dialing will be mandatory; and any misdialed calls will trigger a message directing the caller to dial 10 digits.”

Earlier this year, NANPA  projected a shortage of available 315 central office codes by early 2017. As a result, the commission decided to overlay the new area code in the region.

Officials said both area codes will serve the same calling area, and all existing telephone users in the region will retain their current phone numbers, including the 315 area code. However, once the new code has been activated, new telephone numbers will be assigned to either the 315, or the 680, area code.

Counties affected by the change will include: Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Otsego, Saint Lawrence, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates.

According to the PSC, with the addition of the new area code, there will be 17 area codes, total, in New York State.
