Police Chief: Deceased Baby Found By School’s Nurse

By Staff

fowlerSyracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler and Syracuse City School District Superintendent Sharon Contreras held a press conference May 13 regarding the deceased baby found Monday, May 11, at Nottingham High School. Fowler said the baby had been found in a backpack that was dropped off at the school nurse’s office.

“At some point, the nurse alerted the police officer and they discovered that the backpack contained the deceased baby,” Fowler stated.

In addition, he said the police waited before releasing any information to the public in order to protect the mother’s rights.

“We’re talking about the fact that a young lady who attends this school has given birth, and we’re talking about the fact that this baby is deceased,” Fowler stated. “This is a medical issue. So, it’s a very sensitive subject.”

Fowler said police determined the baby died before it was brought to the school Monday; however, preliminary autopsy results had not determined the cause of death, and police were awaiting the results of a full autopsy.

Contreras said students should remember there are family services available in schools to help:

“In every high school, we have family life committees,” she stated. “We help students who are pregnant and parenting. We help make appropriate referrals.”

Fowler said police have not currently ruled the baby’s death a homicide.
