Gov. Cuomo Announces New Initiative to Combat Hate Crimes

Andrew Cuomo has announced several actions to protect civil rights and combat hate crimes in New York, which includes the creation of a state police unit to investigate reports of hate crimes, an expansion of the state’s human rights law to protect all students, and the establishment of a new emergency legal defense fund for immigrants, the governor’s office stated.

Gov. Cuomo laid out the plan at Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City on Nov. 20, and cited the post-election climate, and the recent uptick in reports of discrimination, harassment and violence in the state as reasons for the new initiative.
