Karen Fruscello to Replace Kevin Ahern as STA President

By Staff

karenKaren Fruscello has been elected the new president of the Syracuse Teachers Association.

Fruscello, currently an elementary-school peer observer in the Syracuse City School District, recently challenged longtime president Kevin Ahern for the position, and announced she won the office May 27 on Facebook.

Fruscello will assume the new role July 1.

She ran as a member of the “Working for All of You Party, ” on a platform that capitalized on what she’d labeled as members’ growing frustration with the union’s current leadership, throughout the district.

“The union doesn’t seem available or to be able discuss issues with members in a timely manner,” she said in an article in the Post Standard,. “They don’t feel unified at this point.”

Additional STA members were also elected to the following offices, below:

  • 1st Vice President, Megan Root
  • 2nd Vice President, Don Little
  • 3rd Vice President, Nicole Capsello
  • 4th Vice President, William Scott
  • Secretary, Jim Smith
  • Treasurer, Gregory Bickett

Ahern, who served as STA president since 2010, will remain a representative for SCSD teachers at the state and national level, through the New York State United Teachers, according to the article.

Fruscello’s goals are reportedly to develop a strong working relationship with SCSD Superintendent Sharon Contreras, and to create new training opportunities for teachers as part of SCSD, in an urban school district.

She has also served on the West Genesee School Board since 2010.
