Mary Nelson, founder of the Mary Nelson Youth Center at 2849 S. Salina St., reportedly has filed petitions to challenge Syracuse Common Councilor Khalid Bey in a Democratic primary in September.
Nelson also founded the Back to School/Stop the Violence Barbecue in 2002, which, last year, donated 19,000 backpacks and school supplies to students.
She currently works in billing for the radiology department at Upstate University Hospital.
Bey has represented the city’s 4th district since he won the seat from his opponent, Howie Hawkins, in 2011. In 2013, he took the seat again, defeating Hawkins for a second time.
Reportedly, Bey has said he looks forward to a debate with Nelson.
Nelson had not immediately responded to a request for comment on the matter, July 10.
According to Onondaga County Board of Elections officials, the last day for candidates to pass petitions was July 9.
