“I know how hard this job can be, that’s why I know Hillary will be so good at it,” Obama stated. “She’s got the courage, the compassion, and the heart to get this job done.”
Obama’s endorsement of Clinton followed a meeting with her opponent, Democratic Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Thursday, in a move Democrats undoubtedly hope will unify the party.
Earlier this week, the Associated Press labeled Clinton Democrats’ presumptive nominee, after she won primaries giving her a major lead in the number of delegate votes she needed to cinch the nomination.
And, although Sanders did not say he planned to drop out of the race before the next primary, he said Thursday that he plans to do everything in his power to keep Republican nominee Donald Trump from winning the presidency.
“I’m going to work as hard as I can to make sure that Donald Trump does not become president of the United States,” Sanders stated.
Sanders also said he hopes to meet with Clinton in the near future to work toward advancing the party’s agenda.
Following the president’s announcement, reports said Obama will likely begin campaigning with Clinton soon.
