Rochester has been named among the top 25% of cities in the nation for business startup opportunities.
According to WalletHub, a website that offers financial tools to customers and small business owners, Rochester ranked 35th out of 150 cities nationwide.
WalletHub tallied 16 key metrics including business environment, cost, and access to resources. Rochester came in fifth for cost, 39th for access to resources, and 138 for business environment.
The best city for business startups is Sioux Falls, SD, and the worst is Ontario, CA. Buffalo, NY, also appeared on the list at number 31.
And one Rochesterian business entrepreneur is proving WalletHub’s findings.
Heather Saffer, the 32-year-old founder of Dollop Gourmet frosting, was recently a contestant on the television show Shark Tank. This business reality show centers around up-and-coming entrepreneurs pitching their company to established millionaires in hopes of gaining an investor.
Saffer went in asking for $75,000 in exchange for 20% of her company. After haggling with real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, they came to a deal for $75,000 for 25% of the company.
Saffer places her company’s generic imitrex online value at $375,000 but estimates that with the recent Shark Tank fame, Dollop Gourmet will skyrocket to $500,000 by the end of this year. While 57% of businesses — even small ones like Dollop Gourmet — attract customers through an online blog, not very many are as lucky as Saffer when it comes to winning over investors.
Dollop Gourmet prides themselves on being the only non-GMO, vegan, allergen-friendly, low sugar frosting available on the market. Saffer describes the frosting as a spread, saying it can be enjoyed on not only cupcakes but fruit, pancakes, pretzels, and cookies.
Saffer tells Forbes, “Dollop Gourmet is the healthiest and tastiest shelf-stable frosting that has ever hit the market. I use the highest-quality sustainable ingredients that are organic whenever possible. Dollop Gourmet is not only better for you, but it tastes incredible.”
Dollop Gourmet is offering a Shark Tank special of three of Saffer’s best-selling frostings — hot chocolate, Madagascar vanilla, and peanut butter cookie dough — for $19.99 in celebration of her success.
