Syracuse City School District’s Parent University recently hosted its bi-annual “Family Conference” event, featuring keynote speaker Byron Garrett, author of “The ABCs of Life,” SCSD officials stated.
Attendees took part in two workshop sessions. Discussion topics included helpful hints to make reading fun for children; Common Core math help; Code of Conduct information sessions; yoga; and legal consultations. In addition, Garrett spoke about the importance of parents in the education of young males, and the challenges facing young black males in education.
According to officials, SCSD’s Family Conference events are intended to inform and involve students’ families in their children’s education, by adding to their existing skills, and giving them opportunities for growth and development.
Maker Hall Fair had also been open throughout the program, in order to occupy children with science and technology activities, while parents attended workshop sessions, in addition to receiving refreshments and giveaways. Garrett also held a book signing.
