Attorney General Extends Deadline for Uber, Lyft Drivers to Claim $328 Million Settlement
New York Attorney General Letitia James is urging Uber and Lyft drivers who believe they were underpaid to file claims for a $328 million settlement. The deadline to submit claims has been extended to 11:59 p.m. on January 31, 2025.
The settlement follows an investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), which found that Uber and Lyft withheld funds from drivers and failed to provide key benefits.
“Rideshare drivers keep New York moving and deserve fair compensation for their work,” said James. “I’m proud to have secured this settlement to return funds to drivers. Eligible drivers should file claims now to get the money they’re owed before the deadline.”
The agreement includes $290 million from Uber and $38 million from Lyft, along with reforms aimed at improving driver pay and working conditions. These reforms include:
Minimum Earnings Floor: Drivers outside New York City now earn at least $26 per hour, adjusted annually for inflation.
Paid Sick Leave: Drivers accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 56 hours per year.
Increased Transparency: Drivers now receive detailed ride payment breakdowns, enhanced in-app support in multiple languages, and clearer hiring and earnings statements.
Deactivation Appeals: Drivers can now appeal platform deactivations.
Drivers who worked for Uber between 2014 and 2017 or for Lyft between 2015 and 2017 may qualify for payments. The funds are being distributed to current and former drivers.
The investigation revealed that Uber deducted sales taxes and Black Car Fund fees from drivers’ pay, even though those costs were the responsibility of passengers. Lyft, meanwhile, imposed similar “administrative charges” and failed to provide paid sick leave, violating state and city laws.
Over 88,000 claims have already been submitted, but more than 100,000 drivers across New York are eligible. Drivers who haven’t filed or didn’t receive confirmation for a previous submission are encouraged to act immediately.
