As April marks National Safe Digging Month, New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) are reminding homeowners and contractors to always call 811 before starting any digging project. Whether you’re planting a tree or beginning a construction job, contacting 811 ensures that underground utilities are properly marked—helping prevent serious accidents and service disruptions.

“Before you begin any outdoor project that involves digging, take a moment to call 811 or visit UDIGNY.org,” said Jason Marsh, supervisor of Damage Prevention for NYSEG and RG&E. “This quick, free step helps keep everyone safe and protects vital infrastructure.”

To comply with New York State’s Code 753—which sets guidelines for digging near underground facilities—a location request through UDig NY must be submitted at least two business days before work begins.

Digging Safely: What You Need to Know

Whether you're putting up a fence or tackling a larger project, here are key safety steps to follow:

  • Call 811 or visit UDigNY.org to request utility marking before any digging.

  • Mark the project area with white paint so utility crews know where to focus.

  • Confirm that all listed utilities have been marked or cleared before starting.

  • Know your responsibility: private utilities like electric, water, sewer, and cable are typically not marked and must be located by the homeowner.

  • Keep utility markings visible throughout the project.

  • Use hand tools when working near marked lines.

  • Protect and support any exposed utility lines during the project.

  • In case of damage, call 911 immediately and then contact NYSEG or RG&E.
