New York’s “You’re Hired” initiative, designed to assist displaced federal employees, has received more than 1,300 applications within its first three weeks, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday. The program aims to fill over 7,000 state government positions spanning various sectors, including healthcare, engineering, and legal services.

“New York values public servants,” Hochul emphasized. “We remain committed to connecting skilled, experienced federal workers with opportunities in the state workforce and ensuring they have access to essential resources.”
Thus far, state agencies have conducted over 100 interviews and extended 28 job offers. Additionally, more than 250 individuals have registered for career webinars or utilized online career support resources. The StateJobsNY website has experienced a significant surge in traffic, with over 4 million views and approximately 1.2 million users—1 million of whom are new visitors, according to the governor’s office.
The initiative was launched in response to major federal workforce reductions under the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. These cuts have impacted multiple agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which plans to lay off 10,000 employees and downsize its workforce by 20,000 as part of a broad restructuring effort. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is also considering a proposal to cut its 90,000-person workforce in half.
The federal layoffs have had widespread economic effects, with Washington, D.C., expected to lose approximately 18,900 jobs. Other cities, including Baltimore, Kansas City, San Antonio, Ogden, and Memphis, are also anticipated to experience substantial job losses.
To mitigate these effects, New York State is actively promoting the “You’re Hired” campaign through social media, email outreach, and direct engagement with affected workers. Agencies such as the Office of General Services, Department of Civil Service, and Office of Information Technology Services are among those actively hiring.
