The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is reminding residents that the deadline to file personal income tax returns and pay any taxes owed is Tuesday, April 15, by 11:59 p.m. EDT.
“With the April 15 tax filing deadline approaching, we encourage taxpayers to visit our website at www.tax.ny.gov for last-minute filing assistance,” Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller said. “From tax filing tips to free e-filing options, we’re here to help taxpayers quickly and easily meet their obligations.”
Free Filing Options Available
The state offers several free e-filing services, including Direct File, Free File and other no-cost tools. Eligibility varies based on income and other criteria.
Taxpayers who earned less than $200,000 in 2024—or $250,000 for joint filers—may qualify for Direct File, a free, mobile-friendly platform available in English and Spanish. The service allows users to file both federal and state returns through a single portal.
More information and eligibility details are available on the department’s website.
Help for Last-Minute Filers
Taxpayers seeking answers to common questions or guidance on filing can access the department’s Filing Season Resource Center online. The Personal Income Tax Call Center will also offer extended hours leading up to the deadline.
Estimated Payments and Refund Tracking
Those who made estimated tax payments last year are encouraged to verify their account balance through their Individual Online Services account before filing to ensure accurate reporting.
Taxpayers can track the status of their state tax refund using the “Check Your Refund” tool at www.tax.ny.gov. It remains the quickest way to monitor refund progress.
Extensions and Payment Options
If a taxpayer is unable to file by April 15, an automatic extension of time to file can be requested. However, an extension does not delay the deadline to pay any taxes owed—payment must still be submitted by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties.
Taxpayers unable to pay the full amount are still encouraged to file on time. Partial payments can help reduce additional fees, and various payment plans and options are available on the department’s website.
