Syracuse Aquarium Proposal Faces Challenges Over Additional $11M Request

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A proposed $85 million aquarium in Syracuse is in jeopardy as county lawmakers prepare to vote on an additional $11 million request to fund the project.

The aquarium, planned near Destiny USA, has faced criticism over rising costs and concerns about its economic impact. Originally approved with $85 million in COVID-19 relief funds, officials now say inflation and supply chain issues have driven up costs.

Supporters argue the project will create jobs, boost tourism, and generate revenue. "It’s a transformative project for the region,” said Ryan McMahon, Onondaga County Executive.

Opponents question the financial burden on taxpayers and the lack of transparency about the aquarium's economic viability. The Legislature is expected to decide the project's fate in a vote on Tuesday.
