Taraji P. Henson Unveils "Joy Joints!" Initiative in Honor of Father's Foundation

Acclaimed actress Taraji P. Henson, the driving force behind The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation (BLHF), proudly introduced "Joy Joints!" on September 21, 2023. This nationwide campaign, according to Henson, is designed to rekindle community bonds, foster happiness, and promote mental well-being. BLHF takes its name from Taraji's late father, who grappled with untreated mental health challenges following his return from the Vietnam War, underscoring the severe lack of resources and support available, as detailed on the foundation's website.

The "Joy Joints!" initiative draws inspiration from the vibrant spirit of historic 'juke joints' that thrived in the early 1900s. Its mission is to establish gathering spaces where people can come together and celebrate, with the ultimate aim of countering loneliness, reigniting connections, and spreading joy throughout the nation, as stated by BLHF.

To mark the occasion, on October 10, 2023, the foundation is embarking on a month-long celebration dedicated to amassing a collective 100,000 hours of joy. This initiative underscores BLHF's unwavering commitment to dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting overall happiness.

BLHF is also actively raising vital funds to provide free mental health services to the Black community.

Tracie Jade Jenkins, Executive Director of BLHF, emphasized their dedication to enriching people's lives with joy and encouraging the community to create spaces that not only celebrate happiness but also nurture meaningful and enduring connections. She stated, "We invite everyone to join us in this movement and become agents of the change we aspire to see in the world. Joy is intrinsically tied to mental health."

The foundation points to United States Surgeon General Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, M.D., MBA, who has spotlighted the underestimated public health crisis of loneliness and isolation, which has adversely impacted both individual and societal well-being.

Henson remarked, "Loneliness and isolation may cast shadows, but when we unite, we ignite the beacon of joy that dispels darkness, much like we have done for countless years in the past. It is through unity that we find the strength to combat isolation and celebrate the beauty of human connection."
